A national exhibit that connects black heritage to America’s history is coming to Charlotte.
The Afro-American Cultural Center is hosting an exhibit called “America I AM: The African American Imprint” Aug. 16 at the Afro-American Cultural Center, 401 North Myers Street.
Developed with The Smiley Group Inc. and organized by Arts Exhibition International, “America I AM” is a four-year traveling museum exhibition that tells the story of African people and their legacies through objects, texts, religion, music, and media gathered from every period of the nation’s history. The exhibit will be taking visitors from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and is free.
“America I AM encourages all people to connect in a meaningful way with the foundations of democracy, cultural diversity, exploration, and free enterprise, which began when the first Africans arrived in Jamestown,” Smiley said. “By telling the stories and the events of the past we can help the leaders of the future set the stage for active participation in the democratic process for years to come.”
The exhibit provides a multi-sensory experience complete with more than 150 artifacts, celebrating 400 years of African American contributions to the nation.
“America I AM” contains a customized mobile recording booth where visitors can leave their own “imprints” as recorded video messages that will travel with the exhibition.
